Facet Syndrome

Causes / Diagnosis / Symptoms / Treatment

What is Facet Syndrome?

Facet syndrome can be defined as a degenerative arthritic condition, particularly in the joints between the vertebral column’s superior and inferior articular facets. Every single vertebra in your spine has two superior and two inferior bony projections that allow it to seamlessly articulate while maintaining integrity. There’s a thin fluid-filled sac between these surfaces that prevents friction. When it degenerates, your articular cartilage rubs against the surfaces, resulting in facet syndrome.

Facet syndrome is not typically severe, but it can surely cause you a lot of trouble if left unaddressed. It can cause mild to sharp pain upon exertion, and it tends to worsen with age. However, with correct treatment and proper care, it’s surely a manageable condition.

Causes Of Facet Syndrome

Facet syndrome comes with age, and almost every individual is bound to develop it after a certain age (varies according to the lifestyle; usually above 50). However, there are some bad habits that increase the likelihood of Facet Syndrome.

These include:

    • Obesity: Increased stress on your joints may lead to early Facet Syndrome
    • Sexual predisposition: Women develop Facet Syndrome earlier
    • Trauma caused by accidents and sports injuries can result in Facet Syndrome
    • Jobs or sport due to these activities placing repetitive stress on a joint
    • Genetics
    • Structural bone deformations
    • Metabolic conditions

Diagnosis Of Facet Syndrome

Facet Syndrome is diagnosed based on patient history, clinical evaluation, and a combination of diagnostic tests, including medical imaging.

    1. Patient History: A wide array of questions are asked: the onset of pain, type of pain, previous experiences, surgical history, and medication.
    2. Clinical Evaluation: The medical professional palpates the area while visually observing the overlying skin and overall posture. Any tender areas are noted while the range of motion and stiffness is also checked. A final neurological exam is performed to check for possible nerve damage.
    3. Imaging: This is usually not necessary in diagnosing Facet Syndrome. However, tests like an MRI and X-ray may be necessary in some cases.

Symptoms Of Facet Syndrome

The symptoms of Facet Syndrome arise due to soft tissue damage as well as nerve impingement.

They include:

    • Localized pain that may turn into radiating pain
    • Decreased range of motion
    • Loss of function
    • Tenderness on palpation
    • Stiffness
    • Cracking or grating sounds upon moving the affected joint

The pain may be unilateral or bilateral, depending on the number and location of facets involved.

Surgical Treatments For Facet Syndrome

Surgical intervention is not essential to treat Facet Syndrome. It can easily be dealt with by non-invasive modes of treatment. However, if there is any peculiar damage due to this condition, like chronic nerve impingement with increasing pressure, surgery may be required.

Minimally Invasive Treatments For Facet Syndrome

Non-invasive treatment modalities tend to work best for Facet Syndrome. The primary objective is to reduce inflammation, improve motility, and enhance blood flow.

They include:

    • Chiropractic care and physical therapy help manage nerve pain and musculoskeletal pain, strengthen the muscles around the facets, and improve mobility
    • Bracing
    • Using a hot pack to promote blood flow to speed up the recovery process
    • Using a cold pack to constrict vessels to dampen the pain when it exceeds the threshold
